SCORM E-learning
The term SCORM is an acronym that stands for Sharable Content Object Reference Model. It comprises of those specifications and standards that enable the user to gain knowledge through Online e-learning. The United States Secretary of Defense has come up with this product as a specification for the Advanced Distributed Learning, commonly known as ADL.
The ADL has come up with SCORM as an initiative to deliver a standard to the e-learning initiatives. The e-learning is nowadays becoming more and more popular as the people prefer to access knowledge using the web and SCORM provides an excellent and sound E-learning platform.
Before the arrival of this software, the e-learning contents were not inter operable that means that a complete course or even some of its contents were not in a transferable position from one LMS (Learning Management System) to any other. Thus, the contents of e-learning were not sharable in absolute terms.
Besides making the e-learning contents sharable, the deployed content on any LMS can be assembled with any other e-learning content that is SCORM-compliant. This can lead to the development of a course that will be comprising of the best of breed learning components.
The SCORM courses for e-learning are delivered in the form of a SCORM package. SCORM package is considered to be a set of Sharable content object(SCO). This package is in the Package Interchange Format (PIF). A ZIP file can be taken as an instance of a SCORM package. This consists of all the files that are important to a course or a sub-course. This means that it includes the course structure, metadata about the content, content and metadata about the course.
Some of the free SCORM authoring tools are:
* Docryus.
* Reload Editor.
* eXe-learning.
The key behind developing this package as a shared one is that at least one of the constituted files contains methods which will make the package to be interfaced with any other LMS. But you have to make sure that the content authoring tools are SCORM compliant and the LMS is also SCORM compliant otherwise they will not work together.
The benefits of using SCORM for the purpose of standardized e-learning is the fact that it reduces the cost and time of the user while deploying e-learning solutions. Once you publish it, it can be played forever. It gives you more choice of places to play the content. By the usage of SCORM publishers you can afford to produce much better content. And additionally you can also mix the contents from various sources. And most importantly, if you feel like changing the vendor then you can take your content along with you.
Thus, with the innovation of SCORM, e-learning has become easily sharable, accessible and also in a better quality than ever. So, if you are planning to upgrade your organization's training system or to build a new one then you may be benefited from SCORM.
